🚗 Rental Car Protection with KOHO Travel Insurance

If you're a KOHO customer purchasing travel insurance, you have the option to add Rental Car Protection to your TuGo plan. This optional add-on can cover up to $75,000 for damage to a rental car — but only if a few key conditions are met.

🔒 Not Sold on Its Own

Rental Car Protection cannot be purchased by itself.

It must be added at the time you buy KOHO travel insurance, alongside another plan such as Emergency Medical Insurance or an All-Inclusive Package.

✅ What Rental Car Protection Covers

  • Up to $75,000 for damage to or theft of a rental vehicle
  • Coverage applies only when all policy conditions are met
  • Valid for rentals in Canada and internationally

✅ To Be Covered, You Must:

  • Be a KOHO customer who added Rental Car Protection when buying travel insurance
  • Rent from a licensed car rental agency (no peer-to-peer apps like Turo)
  • Be listed as a driver on the rental agreement
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Use the vehicle for personal travel only (not commercial use or delivery)
  • Follow all terms in the rental agreement

🚫 You’re Not Covered If:

  • You rent from an unlicensed provider or a sharing app
  • You accept the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW)
  • You damage a replacement or exotic vehicle
  • You break the rental terms (e.g. unauthorized driver, off-roading, or illegal use)
  • Damage results from neglect, wear and tear, or mechanical failure
📝 For claims over $2,000, a police report is required.

💡 What’s Not Included:

This add-on only covers damage to the rental vehicle. It does not cover:

  • Bodily injury or death
  • Liability (injury or damage to other people or vehicles)
  • Medical costs (these fall under Emergency Medical Insurance)
  • Stolen personal items
  • Roadside assistance

🚗 Important: Auto Insurance Still Applies

Rental Car Protection under KOHO travel insurance does not replace auto insurance.

When you rent a vehicle, you must still have auto insurance coverage, which is typically provided through one or more of the following:

  • the rental company’s mandatory auto insurance (including liability coverage),
  • your personal auto insurance policy (if it extends to rental vehicles), and/or
  • the credit card used to rent the vehicle (usually for vehicle damage only).

This is why the policy excludes injury or death of the insured renter — those risks are handled under automobile insurance, not travel insurance.

🤔 Do I Need KOHO Rental Car Protection If I Buy the Rental Company’s Insurance?

Not necessarily.

If you purchase the rental company’s CDW/LDW, you are typically already covered for damage to the rental vehicle. In that case:

  • KOHO’s Rental Car Protection would not apply, and
  • You may not need it, depending on your comfort with the rental company’s coverage and cost.

KOHO’s Rental Car Protection is useful if you:

  • Decline the rental company’s daily insurance, and
  • Still want coverage if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
